Step 1

Create a preliminary base and lay it flat on the table so that the closed tip is pointing at 12 o’clock.

Step 2

Place a finger on the vertical centerline, about one centimeter below the closed tip. At this marked point, make a horizontal valley fold, bringing the closed tip down along the vertical centerline. Crease well, then unfold.

Step 3

Turn the horizontal valley fold from the previous step into a mountain fold. Crease well, then unfold.

additional information

  • Repeat steps 2 and 3 several times to soften the paper.

Step 4

Completely unfold the paper and lay it flat in a diamond position on the table.

additional information

  • The corners of the square are at the top, right, bottom, and left.
  • On the paper, the diagonals are mountain folds and the medians are valley folds.
  • If this is not the case, turn the sheet over.
  • The intersection point of the diagonals and medians is also the center of a small square formed by the folds in steps 2 and 3.

Step 5

Lift the bottom corner of the sheet until it is aligned with the bottom horizontal side of the small square.

Step 6

Lift the top corner of the sheet until it is aligned with the top horizontal side of the small square.

Step 7

Lift the right corner of the sheet until it is aligned with the right vertical side of the small square.

Step 8

Lift the left corner of the sheet until it is aligned with the left vertical side of the small square.

Step 9

Gather the four points together so they meet above the center of the small square.

additional information

  • The small square should remain in contact with the table.

Step 10

Turn the model over so that the four points are facing the table and the small square is on top, facing the ceiling. Gently press down on the folds marking the diagonals of the small square.

additional information

  • You are pressing down what was previously the closed point of the preliminary base.
  • The diagonals of the small square now become valley folds.

Step 11

Gently pinch each corner of the small square so that the angle formed by the adjacent sides changes from 90° to 0° (Squash fold).

additional information

  • The top of the model becomes a horizontal cross.
  • There are four symmetrical double-thickness flaps: front, back, right, and left.

Step 12

Fold the front flap to the left and hold it against the left flap.

Step 13

Fold the back flap to the right and hold it against the right flap. Lay the model flat on the table.

additional information

  • You get a five-sided shape (pentagon) with a horizontal edge at the top and four flaps open at the bottom.
  • The front side is smooth.
  • There is a vertical valley fold acting as the axis of symmetry.

Step 14

We are going to create a petal fold on the front side:

Form a valley fold by bringing the lower right edge of the front flap to the vertical axis of symmetry.

additional information

  • To locate the axis, you can temporarily lift the left flap vertically.

Step 15

Form a valley fold by bringing the lower left edge of the front flap to the vertical axis of symmetry.

additional information

  • Two triangles are now folded toward the center.
  • The upper edges of these triangles form a horizontal line.

Step 16

Make a valley fold along this horizontal line, bringing the top of the model down over the triangles. Crease firmly through the layers, then unfold.

Step 17

Unfold the two triangles from steps 14 and 15.

additional information

  • You will see the pentagon shape again with two diagonal valley folds starting from the bottom point.

Step 18

Hold the first layer of the lower point and lift it toward the horizontal crease.

additional information

  • The left and right points of the shape will lift spontaneously.

Step 19

Continue pushing the point upward until it lies flat. At the same time, flatten the side points toward the vertical axis.

additional information

  • You now have an elongated diamond shape on the front.

Step 20

Turn the model over from right to left.

additional information

  • You see a pentagon shape partially covering the diamond.

Step 21

Create a second petal fold by repeating steps 14 through 19 on this side.

additional information

  • You now have a large diamond shape.
  • The lower half has two distinct points of quadruple thickness.
  • The upper half has three overlapping flaps (two large triangles and a small trapezoid).

Step 22

Make a valley fold by bringing the upper right edge of the front flap to the vertical symmetry axis.

Step 23

Make a valley fold by bringing the upper left edge of the front flap to the vertical symmetry axis.

additional information

  • The front now looks like a "kite" shape with a sharp tip at the top.

Step 24

Flip the model over and repeat steps 22 and 23 on the back.

Step 25

Fold the front right flap over to the left (like turning a page).

Step 26

Flip the model over.

Step 27

Fold the right flap over to the left again.

Step 28

Rotate the model 180° (top to bottom).

additional information

  • You now have a diamond shape where the two long points are at the bottom.
  • There are 8 points in total (lower, front/back, top).

Step 29

Shaping the Tail:

Slide your index finger inside the lower right point at the level of the horizontal mountain folds.

additional information

  • Open the point to lay it almost flat.

Step 30

Using your thumb, fold the point upward and inward until it reaches a horizontal position (Outside reverse fold).

Step 31

Mark a point at one-third of the length of this new horizontal point.

Step 32

At that mark, make a valley fold bringing the tip of the tail upward.

additional information

  • The tip should be parallel to the vertical axis, pointing at 12 o'clock. Crease and unfold.

Step 33

Turn that crease into a mountain fold. Crease and unfold.

Step 34

Open the point and lift the tip using the creases to create an outside reverse fold.

Step 35

Shaping the Neck and Head:

Slide your finger inside the lower left tip and flatten it.

Step 36

Using your thumb, lift the tip to invert it inside itself as high as possible (Inside reverse fold).

Step 37

Fold the end of this tip downward at a 90° angle. Crease and unfold.

Step 38

Turn that fold into a mountain fold. Crease and unfold.

Step 39

Open the tip and lower the end using the creases to create another inside reverse fold (the head).

Step 40

Fold the very tip of the head 180° upward to create the horn. Crease and unfold.

Step 41

Turn that fold into a mountain fold. Crease and unfold.

Step 42

Open the tip and lift it using the creases (Outside reverse fold).

additional information

  • The tip now points backward and upward (the horn).
  • The left part is the neck/head/horn; the right part is the tail.

Step 43

Shaping the Wings:

Locate the horizontal line on the front flap. Make a diagonal valley fold, bringing the left tip of the front flap down to the right end of that horizontal line.

additional information

  • Crease only between the back of the neck and the central slit.

Step 44

Turn the model over.

additional information

  • The head is now on the right and the tail is on the left.

Step 45

Locate the horizontal line on the front flap. Make an oblique valley fold by bringing the right tip down to the left end of the horizontal line.

additional information

  • Crease only between the back of the neck and the slit.
